A weekend from which I need a weekend to recover...

Friday

The weekend started Friday night with girls' night out to dinner and a movie. Food was good, movie was cute and company was great! Of course, starting the weekend with a bedtime approximately three hours later than usual set me up for a lot of yawning over the next couple of days!

Saturday

After waking up to another cold and blustery day, the thought of running outside was not appealing at all. Somehow, I convinced hubs to join me on the gym treadmills for our long run. But first I had to get to the gym for my usual Bootcamp class. After an hour of jump squats, lunges, jumping jacks, burpees, mountain climbers and more, I headed home for a quick bite and change. Half an hour later, hubs and I were on our way back to the gym.

We grabbed treadmills side-by-side and settled in for the looooong trek ahead. It was time to channel my inner Emz. FYI, 13 miles + is a long way to run in one place - by far my longest distance ever on the 'mill. I passed the time by trying to read (unsuccessful), staring at the TV's hanging overhead (nothing good on), people-watching, chatting with hubs occasionally, listening to tunes and breaking the run down into shorter chunks. I sipped water every mile and ate a Shot Blok every 3, and increased the speed at regular increments.

The treadmill switched to cool-down mode automatically after an hour so I had to reset and get started again. In the first hour I had run 6.3 miles, so I set a goal of hitting 13 miles total by the end of the second hour. This kept things a lot more interesting for the second half as I constantly cranked the speed. I ended up running 7 miles in that second hour, finishing off at 7.5 mph.

13.25 mi (21.3 KM)
2:00:00
9:03/mi (5:38/KM)

I can honestly say that it wasn't nearly as hard as I thought running for so long on the treadmill. It's not something I would choose to do often, but it was a good alternative to the freezing cold and nice to get the long run done before a night on the town!

First stop was the Bier Markt (an interesting choice for two non-beer-drinkers, but the food and atmosphere are great!).

Photos from website - I am a bad food blogger!

After dinner we had some time to kill (and food to digest) so we took advantage of being downtown and wandered the city streets, taking in the festive sights.

Eventually we made our way to the theatre for the main event: Wicked! It was a fantastic show and wrapped up a great night out.

Sunday

Sunday morning came early and we had plans to hit the Whole Life Expo with Juliana and her hubby. In a word, it was... peculiar. As we walked up and down the first couple of aisles, enjoying free samples both ordinary and obscure, it seemed to be more or less what we had expected.

But at one point we turned a corner, and things started getting bizarre. Suddenly the vendors wanted to
free our possessions from "spiritual contamination", cure us of "a horrible compote of toxicity in an unprecedented assault on our health", treat our ADHD through vaporization, take us on "an inner journey from darkness to light" and - my personal favourite - photograph our "aura and chakra."

It was an experience, to say the least. We made our way through each aisle, as the exhibitors became more and more unusual, avoiding eye contact so as not to get sucked into any pitches. We eventually made our way out, baffled at how bizarre it had been but having a god laugh over the experience. At least we had free passes!

After the expo, we headed to a trendy local vegetarian joint for lunch - Fresh.

Again, bad food blogger = website photos!

The food was great and satisfied everyone - even meat-loving hubs. Unfortunately I started to feel extremely ill on the way home. I'm not 100% sure if it was the random assortment of taste tests I had been subjected to enjoyed at the expo, something from lunch or a combination of both, but it was not fun at all. Thankfully I made it home before emptying my stomach. (sorry for the TMI) After eating some crackers and crashing on the couch for a long nap, I finally felt better and hubs and I managed to head out for a short run before dinner.

How was your weekend?
What's the longest you've run on a treadmill?
Have you seen Wicked?

Haven't seen Wicked, but we have tickets for the 6th of Feb!!!!

This calendar year I only ran on the treadmill one time...5 miles. Hated it. I'm really glad I have been able to do virtually ALL of my running outside!!

Busy weekend, girl!!! I wondered if that movie was any good - my daughter and I were going to go on Friday but I was too lazy :). LOVE me some treadmill - longest I did was just before Boston and again just before San Fran when I did 21 miles...Emz still has the prize. Never seen wicked, but I'd love to! Happy Monday!

Hey, matching shirts! I once ran for thirty minutes on a dreadmill. I kept looking for the Guinness people, that had to be a world record......

Wow good for you! I have a hard time running that long on the treadmill. An hour is about as long as I like to do indoors, and even then I throw in hills and intervals to change things up a bit. Running outside I can go a lot farther. Maybe I will go to the gym during a good tv show and see how long I can go today!

Ommmmmmm....

You are a beast to run on the treadmill that long! My longest is about 8 miles and I thought I would die.

Haven't seen Wicked but would love to...

I actually had to check my own blog to remember what my longest treadmill run was. Answer=14 miles. I'm glad you could have some fun with it! It's not my favorite way to get long runs in, but when weather demands it, it's not so bad!

My Longest treadmill run has to be about an hour and/or 7-8ish miles. Anything beyond that I really haven't done because I really haven't done that many runs over 9 miles.

When wicked came here we didn't go see it but I heard it was awesome! You definitely had a fun weekend!

Whew what a weekend for sure! That is one long run on TM, awesome job! My longest has been 6miles and it was so tedious. I've heard so much about Wicked and just missed out on ticket two summers ago in NYC :(
Would love to see it at some point.

That's a long time on a treadmill. I maxed out at 10 miles and felt like a hamster on a wheel, but you're right that it's nice to change things up when the weather is bad. Hope you feel better!

Whew, 13 miles on the dreadmill? That's pretty intense, Marlene! The farthest I've managed is 8 miles, and I was watching the Tour de France with my husband sweating to death on the rollers next to me!

what a weekend! you are a rockstar for getting 13 miles done on the treadmill. did you love wicked? my hubs fell asleep but I really enjoyed it!

Good for you! I've gone 9 miles on the treadmill. Had to use it last night for hillwork because I ran out of time in the daylight. It is really too cute how you two dress alike!

I had no idea you could photograph an Aura - might have had to test that out, just for entertainment ;)

I'd LOVE to see Wicket - my parents saw it in NYC and rave about it!

Longest treadmill feat is 10 for me, too. Not sure I could push that limit...

You made me miss Toronto with this post! Wicked is great. I took my grandmother to see it for her birthday one year and she loved it too. Fresh is one of my favourite veggie restaurants in Toronto. I used to eat there all the time and never got sick, so I'd blame the expo taste testing!

I max out at 10K on the treadmill - good for you for sticking it out!

Great PR on the treadmill. The hubs and did 7.5 on Sunday and that is the farthest we have run. +13 is OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!

I love Fresh! Sorry if that contributed to how you felt. I find I can leave feeling a bit bloated especially if I've had a protein or fruit smoothie combined with something like black bean burritos. Impressive amount of time on the treadmill for sure!

Matching red Adidas treadmill shirts…love it. I still think that what you and EMZ do is treadmill abuse and should not be tolerated.

I’m tired after just reading this post.

Your weekend sounded great (minus the tummy aches). Our weekend was wonderful. I had to return to work today but I am thankful to have work to go to and Hubbs is home for a bit longer so that will help make the transition back to work easier.
My longest run on the treadmill is around 20 miles last winter. I can manage 10 fairly easy it gets harder after that!
Never seen Wicked or any like your "whole life expo." It sounded a little "out there" for me.

Heidi said...

You & your hub are such a cute couple. That sure sounds like an odd bit in that expo - hahaha. I'm betting it was something you ate there, or maybe someone messed with your spiritual aura there. ;)

I think the longest treadmill run I've done is about 8 miles. Though I'm not sure. Whenever I run on the treadmill I play number games. Yesterday I aimed to run consecutively faster miles. I'd try to predict what my mile time would be, then check it at the 1/4 or 1/2 mile and adjust accordinly. I'm not very fast at math so by the time the next "marker" comes around I might have worked it out. I have no TV in my gym, and it's a home gym so no people watching even. It can get boring! But, better alternative when you really don't want to face the elements.

Yeah try 22mi on a hotel treadmill aka no one else around to talk to! That was a great pace for your 13! Oh yeah, I lied, I read this next post. I know I said I'd skip it to make up for Fridays but I didn't. Gee thanks for not giving us 'mericans a thanksgiving shoutout Gah. You know we are needy. Haha.

Lindsay said...

Oh yeah- nice hippie festival. How come you didn't buy any hokeyness?!? As for the puking... In my experience (from all my doctors) puking + female = ... well, you know. Better go study for a test!

Laura said...

Awesome weekend! THe longest I have done on a 'mill is ~ 13km in a dungeon of a hotel workout run. I am thinking I have to do a 15km run on vacation soon...I hope the scenery at the next hotel is better!

Teamarcia said...

With a sentence like that on the mill, you more than earned a fun night out!
My longest TM stint was 22 miles.
I think I'm the last person on earth that has not seen Wicked.

I couldn't do 13 miles on the treadmill. Very impressive. l loved Wicked. Sang the songs for days.

Holy cow! 13 miles on a treadmill?! That is dedication! :) Good for you! As for "Wicked", I am kinda obsessed with the song "Defying Gravity"...LOVE it!

MCM Mama said...

Sounds like a fun weekend! My farthest on the treadmill is 10 miles. I'm feeling a bit like a voyeur, reading about running while I can't actually run LOL.

What an awesome weekend; lots of fun to be had!

I used to do most of my running on a treadmill and I did about 12 miles on the treadmill a few years ago and it took everything I had to gut it out. Now that I am doing most of my running outside the treadmill is my nemesis. I
did 4 miles on a hotel treadmill tonight and it killed me! Even with music I was bored.

Wicked is great; I saw it about a year ago.

What a weekend lady!
I have done 20 on the old mill, and it, like the expo, is an experience. You can't imagine the ups and downs you go through while trying to slog through it! Good work though!
Sorry about the tummy - I bet that crazy expo had something to do with it!
Have a great week!

Great treadmill run! I've only managed like 5 miles on the treadmill but that may have to change this winter! I have not seen wicked but I have tickets for Dec 20! So excited!

What a fun weekend, even though you got sick. My weekend: I had the opportunity to see my jazz musician friend from Seattle perform at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis Saturday night. I worked on jewelry that I'm selling at a sale in my hometown this upcoming weekend. Longest run on treadmill: 7 miles. I have never seen Wicked, but want to. I visited with an "intuitive consultant" at a ladies' night out event a few weeks ago and thought she was a total crackpot.

Johann said...

I had a great weekend but was out in the mountains running as you know.
I've never been on a treadmill.
This is the first time I hear about Wicked...I'm a true geek/nerd.
The Whole Life Expo sounds strange!

My longest treadmill was 10 miles at altitude in Colorado.. URGH!!

What a FUN FUN weekend, I love that you matched at the gym.. that way if you lose eachother you can just say "have you seen a guy in the same shirt."

I really really want to see Wicked. and I have never been to a whole life expo, pretty sure I would be OVERWHELMED and my tummy would respond the same as yours..

HUGS!! Miss you!

I think anything beyond 6 miles on a treadmill is torture, so I'm impressed.

My sister and I got together to see Morning Glory Friday night as well. And, I also got to bed about three hours later than usual. :-)

I think the longest I've run on a treadmill at one time was 5 or 6 miles...tops. I'm afraid that will probably change this winter, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I don't mind the cold, but the ice scares me to death. :-)

Wicked was wonderful, wasn't it?!?!?!?! I'd love to see it again!

I once dated a guy who took auro photographs, and sold "laundry balls" at expos like these. It was kinda fun to go along at first, but starting getting more and more creepy. :-)
