Heat Wave

There's a common theme in the blogosphere these days: it's gettin' hot! Summer is here in full force this week with consecutive days of record-breaking temperatures over 30C (86F) and a humidex in the upper 30s (upper 90s). We are certainly feeling it here in Southern Ontario and many nearby cities have even issued an Extreme Heat Alert. (My friends to the south can go ahead and laugh now.) "Hot" is definitely a relative term, but this is about as hot as it gets around here.

I may not have chosen the best week to ease back into training. Yesterday's 5K with hubs nearly left me in a steaming heap at the park and this evening's 10K with the group is not looking promising.

True, I could be getting up early to run in the more tolerable pre-dawn temperatures. But I enjoy running with my group on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and part of me thinks I should just suck it up and get used to it.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate... is Nuun available via IV??

my second run yesterday was done in 85 degrees...it really makes for a different challenge. i like it warmer, though. anything beats running through blizzards!

I hope it passes soon. And I hope those doing Ottawa don't have this weather as that would be not only ugly but unsafe.

ya its hot!
i was supposed to run this morning, but did not wake up. and now i am regretting it!

I went for a walk to the bank and back this morning, and felt sick afterwards. actually felt kinda dizzy and lightheaded.

yes, we must stay hydrated!!!! keep the h2O flowing!

Very warm in Denver, too....at least we don't have the humidity, but there's a consequence with that, that being you are thirsty all the time and constant dry-mouth running. Makes ya drink more though so I guess that's a good thing. Good luck with the race - fun!!!

I am loving the heat. It does make it tough to stay hydrated but the sweat makes me feel like I am really working hard!

yup. it's 86 here right now and I don't have time for my run until 5:30 when my older two are at dance. It promises to be a killer today! Good luck staying cool!

Oh, the humidex! I kinda miss the Ontario humidity and all the talk that goes with it!

Keep drinking that water - good for you for braving the heat to get out with your group!

I like to think that the heat helps melt the fat right off me....I can dream right?

I'm afraid running in the am is no less tolerable when it is this hot :(

Enjoy your group run tonight! It has been cooling down in the evenings a bit - something we wont see during July! The mornings have been nicer temps but its still hotter than usual! It beats a snow storm and ice though!

Humidex is not a term I hear often here but those conditions are certainly very familiar (but not endeared). One good thing about getting used to it is that when things cool off, you'll likely get free speed :-)

If you get that Nuun IV figured out, let me know! I keep telling myself I need to get used to the heat & humidity - summer is just beginning.

Yes, it is relative! I actually think it's good to train in the warmer temps/humidity. Get used to it in training and it doesn't hit you so much come race day.

it's really hot here too, today! I know what you mean about wanting to run with your usual group - even when it's super hot. Hope that you had enough to drink and had a good post-run meal!

Yep, I was a hot mess running mid-morning today. Bleh.

The literature out there says it takes about 2 weeks to get used to it, but in reality it takes me a bit longer. I'm still waiting. ;)

I guess I should be jealous but I am, I love the heat! It's been too cool here lately!

oh man, if I dont get out in the morning, it means treadmill for me. no thanks 90 degrees.

Jami said...

I was intimidated by the heat outside yesterday and opted to run on the treadmill in my apartment complex's gym. Well turns out it was so hot outside that the A/C inside the gym could not keep up. It ended up being hotter in the gym than outside!!!

That's what I get for being a wuss..

Hydrate all day long and wake up as early as you can! (I'm already really dreading those 4/4:30 wake up calls...)

I'm a bigger wimp because 79F is my ceiling. Time to get up early!
