Progress

I joined my clinic group this morning at our instructor's house for a lovely brunch after their run. It sucked not being able to enjoy a beautiful 21K in the country with the gang, but it was great to see everyone and get some encouragement. I have been assured that they will be there waiting for me when I'm on the road again and train with me for a fall marathon.

I'm still coming to terms with the fact that I won't be able to fulfill my spring plans. Even if I'm running again in 4 more weeks (which is likely the best case scenario), I won't be ready for a full in May.

The only consolation is that I hadn't registered yet!

I'm trying to keep a positive attitude. In the grand scheme of things, this will only be a blip on the radar. I have a lifetime of races ahead of me. But it still sucks. This is the longest I have not run since I started about two years ago.

The good news is, my shoulder feels a lot better. I'm able to take the sling off for a couple hours at a time without too much discomfort and mobility has increased significantly since my appointment last week. It's still going to be a long road, but the improvement is reassuring.

I'm planning to start walking on the treadmill at my parents' house this week. If that goes okay, I'll try the stationary bike at the gym. Hopefully I can maintain some semblance of fitness over the next few weeks. After 14 completely sedentary days, I feel like a blob.

I'm going back to work tomorrow and I know it will be good to get back into a routine. Sitting around the house all day has not been good for my mental or physical well-being... although I think I have read more books than I did all last year and I have enjoyed watching Ellen everyday. :)

Thanks for your continued encouragement and support.

Your positive attitude is so encouraging! You're so right about the blip, and about a lifetime of running still ahead of you. Keep healing, and good luck at work tomorrow. :) Sounds like you have a great marathon group too!

You seem to be doing a good job keepign your spirits up, but if you ever start thinking about what you CAN'T do, I suggest focussing on what you CAN do.

It worked for me this weekend. I can't run. I can't do yoga. I can't go to the gym. I CAN finsih knitting my daughter's scarf. I CAN trim the dogs nails. You get the idea. :-)

You're a tough cookie. Good luck getting back into work, I'd be tempted to sleep all day!

Aw Marlene, I just want to give you a big hug! I'm so glad that your shoulder is starting to feel better. Fingers crossed that walking and the stationary bike will be in your future soon!

Your attitude will help a lot as you head down the road to recovery! It can be so difficult to have your plans sidelined and to be kept away from an activity you love, but remaining strong mentally is half the battle!

I hope things continue in the right direction. I think the bike will help keep you legs moving. I know it must really stink, but use this time to work on some other aspects of running, (nutrition, maybe you can do some exercises for leg strength, etc..)

I'm glad to hear your shoulder is starting to feel better, and I'm sorry your spring training is derailed. I hope you continue to heal quickly!

Sounds like you are doing all the right things they suggest to when you're injured-- keeping in contact w/ your running group, not messing up your healing by being rash, but doing the best you can to maintain fitness. Don't worry. I've been out a month and was back to running in a week. Your body will remember the running if you can maintain the mental side of things-- keep up the good work.

Sounds like you're making a lot of progress.

Sorry about the spring marathon, that really sucks. But you are so right...you have so many more races ahead of you!!

Hope work went well today for you! I hate not being able to run too and I know that "blob" feeling. I continue to hope your recovery is quick!!

I'm so impressed by your positive attitude - I have no doubt that you will be right back on track with running once you are all healed up.

I'm sure your attitude about the whole thing will improve once you get back to doing some of the things you usually enjoy, including going to work. Too funny about the Ellen thing! When I was laid up a couple of years ago, I got into that too.

Hang in there and keep up your great attitude. You will be back in no time.

yes! hang on to your positive attitude. so true about this just being a "blip on the radar". you will bounce back and be back on your feet in no time, and then you'll be wishing you could take 4 weeks off! :) i hope the walking and potential stationary biking goes well, but don't let the noise of the tm/bike drown out anything your body is trying to tell you! ;)

So glad to hear the shoulder's getting better. And your positive attitude is awesome :)

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear all this. I know how bummed you must be about the spring and sitting in a house not being able to work out after being so active never helps.

Hope you're healed up and out there again soon!

Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better. I know it totally sucks. I was out of comission for about 8 months when i had ankle surgery- i even missed a season of soccer. It was pretty horrible all around, but I think you are doing the right thing by staying involved in your clinic group. That will make you feel more connected to your running buddies. Gluck walking on the 'mill and keep smiling (fake it till you make it, maybe?)

Glad to read your getting better.
I hope you have a good work week!
I'm doing a virtual run on Feb 14 and I'll be running for you too!

WOW!!! I completely missed everything going on with you! I disappeared from blogland for a while, now I'm catching up, geeze, I'm so sorry to hear about your shoulder. I was reading your blog (backwards) and kept going "no..no...what happened...how did this happen...damn the skiing!!!".
I had shoulder surgery just over 2 years ago, I had a "SLAP Lesion", so I tore the labrum and bicep tendon off the bone, so they drilled it, pulled the tendon back through and anchored it in. The recovery was very long. I was glad to read that you don't need surgery. Just a word of caution when starting your activity back up, I remeber the first time I walked on the treadmill I felt fine, but the next day was awful. Take it slow, that area moves a lot more than you think it does. I'll be thinking about you!

Ohhhhh Marlene you're doing awesome ;D I totally understand how frustrating having an injury is (although not to your extent) Hang in there chica! There will be a day when this is a distant memory!

Then maybe you can aim at two fall marathons! that's always fun. Just think, you'll be running again just as it gets nice around here..
