Thank you so much for your outpouring of comments and support; it means a lot to both of us.
Mark has been pretty bummed and is having a hard time dealing with the disappointment, but I'm trying to help him work through it. No doubt it's hard to see 18 weeks of hard work and dedication trickle away, but I hope he is proud of what he has accomplished, whether or not he has a medal to show for it.
It's important to remember that regardless of what happens on race day, completing the training is an achievement in itself. He pushed himself to the limits, reached several new records along the way and learned a lot in the process.
There will be another marathon.
Here are a few photos from the earlier stages of the race.
Patricia and I with Mark keeping warm in the school before the start. We wore the costumes most of the day and many runners got a kick out of it on the course.
Here's Mark lining up for the start:
We ran down to the nearest street corner to watch him run by:
Then we hopped in the car and bolted to about the 10K point.
Here's blue M&M handing Mark a gel:
Next up was the just after the half way mark.
And finally, we bolted to 30K where Patricia and her hubby Ueli got ready to pace Mark for the remainder of the race. Here they go, Team Yellow!
And unfortunately, you know what happens next.
Mark already has his eye on the Mississauga Marathon, where we both ran the half this year. He's already recruited his pacers!
Special thanks to Patricia and Ueli for being there to support both of us all day long and to my Mom, sister April and her boyfriend Andrew for coming out to the finish line.

Those M&M costumes are adorable!!
Glad to hear Mark is already thinking ahead and eyeing another race. Sometimes injuries can heal faster if one has a little extra motivation. My fingers are crossed for a fast recovery.
My kids love M&M's they would have loved to see you!!
Great photos. I love it when the spectators plan so well and are able to see the runner at a few places along the course.
Hugs to Marathon Redemption..if anyone can support Mark through the process it is you my dear..
Hey did you get anything in the mail yet???
I love that you guys dressed up! So cute! Great pics!
Ditto on the costumes. Still bummed he didn't get to complete the full victory lap yesterday but kudos for all the hard work and for toughing out 35K while feeling off. I hope the docs/physio are saying that he will be OK soon.
Not to be superstitious or anything, but I think it's bad luck to wear a Buffalo sweat shirt before a sporting event...next time I'd go Habs or Yankees--even Ti-Cats... ;)
You got some great photos of him racing! He'll be stronger in the next race because of this one. Are you thinking of running the full too?
the next one will taste even sweeter i bet. Any news from physio? Happy that he's looking forward to another already... great pics!
Just read your last post, too. So sorry for Mark!
Great photos.
Those costumes are so cute! Does Mark have a diagnosis yet? I hope he recovers qickly/well, and comes back stronger than ever!
Great pictures! Mark looked like he was having a blast, poor guy!
I'm so sorry to hear about Mark's run. Like you said, there will be other races.Poor guy. Hope he's okay.
As for those M&Ms... I'm trying to get off them at the moment. Man - to see two life sized M&Ms?! Makes me consider canibalism for the first time :)
The M&M costumes are GREAT!
He's looking very strong in these pics - you'd never know that his leg was bothering him. I hope he's doin' alright!
OMG, LOVE the M&M costumes! That is just fantastic!
I agree that hubby looks really strong in all of those photos. He will come back and be stronger than ever in the next one! I hope he feels better soon!
I love the M&M costumes!
Better luck to your hubby next time around!
Mark really looked good. He will come back strong and hungry for redemption, too.
Dealing with a DNF in a marathon is tough. I had one at Chicago in 2007 (ended up in a medical tent with heat exhaustion), and I remember the feeling of disappointment quite well. But, eventually that bitterness fades, and the experience honestly just becomes one more race experience. I learned a LOT about what happened to me, and other runners, that year at Chicago.
And to be honest, at this point, I'm glad to have had that DNF. It's almost like you're not a true runner until you've had one collossal failure!
What does not kill us only makes us stronger... Mark will come back better than ever! Great pics!
Hope the recovery goes well. It bites to not have an 'end' to all that training but again, it was the right decision. We have a runner friend who insisted on racing through an injury and is now dealing with a bunch of other injuries on top of the original one.
Great pics! Great idea to dress up! Hoping the recovery goes well for Mark.
those are some great photos!!! i love the m+m costumes, too.
i'm so so so sorry for mark-- it sounds like he was really smart about it, though and lucky there was an aid/friends close by. hope it is not too serious and rehab/physio brings out the best in us i think-- shows real dedication to recovery and a single minded focus. i hope he's back in no time!
aww great pics!! sorry I've been MIA on commenting...i'll be back!
Those are some awesome photos. Even though the end wasnt what Mark wanted, those pictures bring out the best parts of the marathon before he had to stop. He will get another chance and I am sure he will do well!
LOOOOOVE that you wore the costumes, oh my gosh how wonderful!! You really did get some great pics of him running and we all hope the next one is better
Great pictures. Your soo right that completing training is a HUGE accomplishment all together. Training is alot of pressure on the "one racE" your training for. Look at it this way, Mark's body is much more prepared for the next training now!
great costumes too!
Sorry to mark but he has a great attitude! There will be more marathons. You guys are cute in your M&M costumes! I love it
You guys always have way too much fun.
Mark, be proud of your commitment and all of your training, that counts more than the race itself...
Love the M&M costumes!!
And kudos to Mark for recognizing his limit. That's a really tough, but very smart, call to make. I can only hope I would be able to make the same decision if I had to.
H =)
Love your M&M costumes!
Glad Mark is already looking forward to another race.
Cute costumes. Totally would have made me smile during a race.
You and Mark are racing machines! Glad you both are gearing up for the next one. Tell Mark, most of us have been there and know how crappy injuries are. But - he'll be back!!!
Cute costumes! Mark will rock it in his next marathon!
It's so true what you said...training in itself is an achievement. I can't imagine how bummed he must feel. But he'll be better and stronger the next time around.
it is SO true what you said. i have told myself all that many times. getting through the training and completely dedicating yourself to it is definitely something to be proud of.
Those costumes were great. The husband looked great as well. Glad he's so positive and wants to do another race.
I love those costumes!
Sorry that Mark had an injury cut his marathon short. I cannot imagine how disappointing that must be, but he certainly made the right decision.
I really feel for Mark. It's utterly heartbreaking, knowing the hours and miles we pour into this sport. With his 1000 miles of training, I'm sure he was picturing what race day and pace would feel like. But it's true, we do get a hell of a lot out of our training and he'll emerge a stronger runner.
Cute costumes! Also, a great attitude. It sounds like Mark is already making this experience part of his training for future races. That predicts an even stronger running future for sure!
Great pictures. And it's great to hear Mark's not defeated by this set back. Planning another Marathon! Yeah! It's only a failure if you don't try.
Awesome pictures. Love the M&M costumes!!!
Mark will totally rock a marathon in the future.
MCM mama
wellllllll you know i love m&m's..... :)
hope mark is on a quick mend! i can only imagine the heartbreak. i know we get bummed about missing a couple training runs, let alone having to pull out of a race. big hugs. he'll have his marathon redemption!
