Puketastic

As part of this training cycle, I will be incorporating medium-long runs mid-week for the first time. This is something hubs has always done and I remember thinking he was nuts to be heading out for double-digits (in miles!) every Wednesday. Well, look at me now!

I'll be starting with 10-milers (16K) and building up to 13 (21K). At this point I can't begin to imagine running that distance on a Wednesday, but like anything, I will get there gradually.

Today I had my first 16K on deck and the heat wave continues so 5AM seemed like the best option once again. It was still dreadfully hot/humid when I set out, but more bearable than the evening would be.

I felt pretty good through the first half, but really felt it toward the end. I FAILED in the route-planning department and had an almost non-stop climb for the last 3K. I paused a few times, but felt sick and dizzy each time so I just kept on going (slowly!) to get it done.

I don't think I have ever felt as sick after a run as I did when I got back to the house. All I could do was lie down until it (mostly) passed so I could get ready for work. I felt nauseous in the car and had to run into the washroom when I got to the office. Apparently my stomach wanted to eliminate some excess liquid! (Ew.) I felt somewhat better after that, but still light headed and woozy in general. Finally, 4 hours post-run, I am starting to feel better.

I drank plenty of water during and after the run, but I neglected to take Nuun or Salt Stick for electrolytes. Lesson learned!

16.0K (~10mi) in 1:34:49. I'm glad that's done! Now I'm ready for a nap.

Sorry you felt so crummy! That is no fun. I have not tried salt tablets and guess I should give them a try.

I like mid week long runs when I have the time to do them. It can be tricky with work.

In this heat electrolytes are a must! Sorry you felt so bad and hopefully next Weds it is better for you.

I used to think mid-week mid/long runs were the worst. I have grown to love them when I'm in training.

Medium runs mid-week are great, you'll get there. Try taking some electrolytes pre and post run, that may help the qeezies.

I have been feeling drained and I only ran 3 miles. Hope you feel back to 100% soon. The heat is insane - I do not want to leave work!

I'm a big believer in those medium distance runs mid-week.

Now--I thought I had won Big Daddy Tri Diesel's pukie award this week for dry heaving. I think you may have usurped me!

Nice job on the mid-week long run! Those who dare such mileage in the middle of the week are heroic to me!

Ah! So impressed that you toughed it out - 5 a.m. is really the *only* time that this heat is maangeable, but it sounds like Toronto is similar to DC - it really isn't That much cooler, even that early (especially with the humidity factor, ew).

The mid-week Long(ish) run sounds smart to me! I imagine it will make it seem like that distance is "normal" after a while - meaning 26.2 will "feel" that much shorter (ya know, comparatively..heh).

Wow! You did that before work?!? What a great way to start your day oh minus the puking-almost passing out part. It's just your body getting used to the idea!

I think long runs mid week will be awesome for you!

5AM run ... I don't know how you do it. But certainly the only way to beat the heat. At least out west we don't get that awful humidity that you guys get. I hear it's pretty horrible right now.

NICE! I think i'm going to add those mid week longer runs in now too. Honestly, I'm dreading it. :)

Double digits before work? Impressive! Hope they don't always leave you feeling so crappy!

Double digit runs mid week is NOT easy! Good for you for getting it done, but please take care of your body in this hot weather!

nice marlene! you've grown by leaps and bounds in the past two years (of me stalking your blog) :)

sorry to hear your stomach didn't like it, but hopefully the electrolytes do the trick! i know how fun nausea is...

Now see! This is what I am talking about! This totally happened to me a couple of weeks ago (but I was only running 4 miles)! I felt crappy for the rest of the day. I thought maybe I was getting sick, but nope, it was because I had run when it was waaayy to humid (for me) in the am!

Great job on finishing! I know I wouldn't have.

Be careful. Sick and dizzy is your body's way of telling you to do something different.

You definately sweat more when it's hot outside...more electrolytes needed.

The heat is brutal! Kudos to you for 1) getting up that early and 2) finishing it! Props!!!

Sorry to hear the run left you feeling uneasy. I bet it's due somewhat to the heat. But i think you are an allstar for sticking it out. If I would have read this post before my 10 miler this morning I may have chickened out. It's not quite that hot here yet. But how awesome to run 10 miles and then go to work. You are my hero!I had to take the day off to get mine in!! :)

Whew. Scary. Glad you are okay!

I think mid-long runs midweek are awesome. The last few training cycles I do have you peaking at 10 or 12 miler 3x in a week with a 20 miler for a long run that week. It's been working so far for me :)
